GARDENING

PRESENTATION

THURSDAY, MARCH 5

  "Built To Last:

      Gardening With Long-Lived Plants"

         with Julia Cencebaugh Kloth

Do your foxgloves fizzle? Does your lupine languish? Some perennials last only a few years, while others can thrive for decades—some survive even a century or more! In this engaging talk, you will discover why longevity varies and why it isn’t your fault, even when the label promises “carefree.” Find out what you need to know in order to choose enduring plants, so you can save time, money, and a little garden-related heartbreak along the way.

Julia is a preservation specialist and archivist with the Garden Conservancy, focusing on garden documentation, plant legacy, and translating landscape history into practical preservation strategies. She is especially interested in how enduring plants function as living records of place. Julia holds certification from the New York Botanic Gardens in landscape design and the International Society of Arboriculture, and is a Master Gardener.

GARDENING

PRESENTATION

THURSDAY, MARCH 12

"Poetry, Prose, and Art in the Garden"

               with Donna Katsuranis

Do you see beauty in a garden? Indeed, gardens feed our souls and our bodies—and they are also our own expressions of the beautiful! In this gentle presentation, you’ll be inspired to find creativity in your own gardening life, and you will come away with ideas for enhancing your garden space and your garden library. You will also learn about some garden artists and what inspires them.

Donna is an Advanced Master Gardener who lives and gardens in Brookfield, CT. She has been published in CT Gardener magazine and other publications, taught Advanced Master Gardener classes, and lectured throughout the Northeast. She is also a principal for the Kiwanis Giving Garden in Brookfield, which grows vegetables for local food pantries. Her aim is to educate people about the wonders of Nature, one gardener at a time.

GARDENING

PRESENTATION

THURSDAY, MARCH 26

  "Companion Planting"

                     with Karen Brown

What is companion planting? It is the best way to arrange your plantings to enhance growth, encourage pollinators, discourage pests, and improve soil. There is scientific proof that some vegetables and herbs are simply better together! And some are not. In this eye-opening talk, you will learn the tried-and-true gardening technique of companion planting so you can achieve your goal of a healthy, productive garden!

Karen completed the Master Gardener program in 2019 and enjoys gardening at the Brookfield Lions Club Community Garden, the Victory Garden in Newtown, CT, and the UCONN Extension Master Gardener's Demo Garden in Bethel, CT. She grows herbs and vegetables, donating most of what she has grown to the local food pantries in Brookfield and Newtown.
